Why was I drawn to Stanford Settlement?
Reflecting on my childhood, I often realize that I could have used a Stanford Settlement Neighborhood Center in my life. To meet me today, you would not imagine that I had a difficult childhood coping with poverty and living in disadvantaged neighborhoods. I was blessed as a teenager to forge down a better path to become a successful adult in both my personal life and career.
My experiences and successes have given me the passion and desire to seek opportunities to give back to not only to my community, but those individuals facing similar obstacles. Being introduced to Stanford Settlement years ago and now being a part of the board has allowed me that opportunity. Stanford Settlement, founded in 1936, is a social service organization currently providing services in the neighborhoods of Natomas, Gardenland-Northgate and North Sacramento. Being immersed in these communities and having an amazing group of staff members has been monumental for the health and wellbeing of families living in these neighborhoods. I was drawn to Stanford Settlement due to their diversity, their family-focused mission and the programs they offer children, teens and seniors, as well as being committed to communities in need. The passion and commitment to families in our neighborhoods from staff and board members is seen daily. Constantly looking forward and focusing on addressing any community need they face at any given moment is uplifting and impressive to say the least.
