Success Stories...

Louise is 83 years old and has been coming to Stanford Senior Center for over 4 years. After her husband passed away, she stayed with her children, but when they left for work every day, she felt all alone and depressed. She spent some time taking care of her granddaughter which helped her feel better for a time. But when her granddaughter began Kindergarten, she found herself alone again. She began seeing her doctor two times a month for depression.
Her daughter started looking around for different centers for Lucy to go to, to help her feel less isolated. When they found Stanford Settlement’s Senior Center, it was a blessing. She is able to get here every day because door-to-door transportation is part of our program.
Now she only goes to the doctor every few months and her daughter and doctor have seen a dramatic change in Louise’s well being for the better. She has friends that she looks forward to seeing everyday and she is involved in a variety of program activities, including shopping trips, yoga, and daily lunch.

Eunice is 88 years old and has been coming to Stanford Settlement’s Senior Center for almost 2 years. She was living alone in another state when her daughters went to visit her. They wanted her to come live in California near them, so she could get the care she needed and wouldn’t be alone.
When she arrived in California, Eunice’s daughters learned that she was taking dialysis 5 days a week, along with many medications. In addition, the move to California was a drastic change for her so she struggled both physically and emotionally.
Not long after she arrived in California, Eunice’s daughters got her involved with the Senior Center. After two months, they noticed a huge change in their mother, for the better. She was able to reduce the amount of medications she was on, and currently needs dialysis only three days per week.
She participates in arts and crafts, bingo, and exercise classes at the Senior Center. She also has made many friends here, which helps her feel more connected and supported. Her life is better because of the relationships and support she experiences here.
